What did you have in breakfast today morning?
There are umpteen number of studies done on whether breakfast is indeed
the most important meal of the day. There is an old saying which says 'breakfast
like a king, lunch like a common man and dinner like a beggar'.
Is this backed by science, that
healthy breakfast makes you healthy? And what really makes a heathy breakfast? Although
it’s not as simple as 2 + 2 =4 but it’s been clearly and amply found in all the
studies that breakfast eaters are healthier than breakfast skippers. One of the most wide-reaching
reports is that of the European branch of the World Health Organization, who
conducted a health behavior survey of over 200,000 male and female
schoolchildren. The report notes that regular breakfast consumption is
associated with higher intakes of micronutrients, a better diet that includes
fruit and vegetables and less frequent use of soft drinks.
American Heart Institute opines that there
is the direct evidence linking breakfast intake both to overall dietary
patterns and the presence of cardio-metabolic risk factors. It says, based on
the combined epidemiological and clinical intervention data, daily breakfast
consumption among US adults may decrease the risk of adverse effects related to
glucose and insulin metabolism.
Many studies have found correlation between eating breakfast and good
health. Skipping breakfast has been linked to lack of concentration, diabetes,
heart disease and higher levels of bad cholesterol and obesity. Although
some one may dis-belief these findings on the premise that it’s because
breakfast eaters have healthier habits rather than crediting the breakfast
itself. But ultimately it bottles down to the fact that if you do healthy
breakfast it will make you healthier and vice versa.
Also, it is amply clear that breakfast gives you much needed shot of
energy, vitamins, and minerals much needed by your body after herculean work by
your body overnight of repairing itself. Now a million-dollar question comes
what should be your breakfast? Your breakfast should be low Glycemic Index,
high protein, and micronutrient rich. So that it provides you steady energy throughout
the day and boosts your metabolism. Breakfasts which are full of unhealthy
carbs disturbs your sugar cycle and puts in in higher risk of diabetes and
obesity. Most of the Indians do carb-based breakfasts (idly, poha, upma,
paratha) So, are you having right breakfast? Are you skipping breakfast to
become lean?
